Version 1.0
Issue Date: May 2024

Qualification -
Unit of Competency ICTSAS403 - Review site environmental factors prior to ICT system implementation
Description
Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to review, identify and assess the impact of site environmental factors prior to commencing information and communications technology (ICT) system installation. It applies to individuals who use specialised knowledge and a systematic approach to assess a physical site to determine its suitability for system installation. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the systems administration and support field of work and include access to:

special purpose tools, equipment and material

industry software packages

staff resources and technical equipment

live network

server and workstation hardware and software

several different device types to be installed

a number of scenarios, such as local area networks (LANs) incorporating hubs, routers and peripherals.

Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.

Element: Plan work area
  • Obtain technical and environmental system requirements for equipment to be installed and document site requirements, including work health and safety (WHS) site specific requirements
  • Consider and take action on requirements associated with equipment against installation requirements
  • Conduct on-site inspection and audit against site specifications
  • Formulate preliminary recommendations for site and assess impact on system installation schedule
  • Prepare preliminary report specifying recommended changes to the site to meet requirements and submit report to appropriate person for approval

Element: Evaluate environment
  • Organise appropriate support staff to facilitate successful installation
  • Install cabling and other environmental equipment to required technical and industry standards
  • Manage hardware installation to ensure WHS standards for hardware installation are adhered to
  • Review and test hardware and software to ensure system meets client business requirements and system objectives

Element: Document recommendations
  • Prepare final report documenting findings and issues relating to site requirements and preparation
  • Submit final recommendations to appropriate person for approval

Evidence Required

List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.

3. Document recommendations

3.1 Prepare final report documenting findings and issues relating to site requirements and preparation

3.2 Submit final recommendations to appropriate person for approval

Evidence of the ability to:

identify environmental prerequisites prior to commencement of information and communications technology (ICT) system installation

sequence the preparatory steps

consider time and budget constraints

document and submit recommendations.

Note: Evidence must be provided for at least TWO site installation schedules.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

discuss key features of current industry accepted hardware and software products

analyse current system's functionality

describe general features and capabilities of network devices

describe physical prerequisites needed for system installation

outline possible legislative requirements relating to cabling and building preservation

identify key features of quality assurance practices

discuss role of stakeholders and degree of stakeholder involvement

describe vendor equipment specifications and installation requirements.

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.
